German Shepherd Guide

The German Shepherd is known for its loyalty, courage, and ability to retain training for various special services. This dog breed is ideal for the use as guide dogs for blind, guardians, drug and illegal imports detection dogs, search and rescue dog.

Appearance

Since German Shepherd dogs are among the most popular dogs of the world, their popularity has led to a great deal of diversity in their appearance. Colors are black and red, black and tan, black and silver, black and cream, solid black, sable, and white. White German Shepherds are a fault in the United States and they cannot enter breed classes at shows.

The length of their coat can range from short to long. Long coats are considered to be a fault in the show ring.

Temperament

Many people think that German Shepherd dogs are very dominant and aggressive. However, they are very approachable and outgoing, though they see strangers with some suspicion. At about five or six months of age, puppies begin to show some awareness of their owners and their surroundings, and show a desire to warn of approaching strangers.

A sound and balanced dog is a perfect choice for those who need more serious protection. For this, a dog can be trained in formal personal protection by an experienced instructor. It is not appropriate to train an overly aggressive or unsound dog in protection because it will be a danger and untrustworthy.

Care and Training

German Shepherd dogs are ardently intelligent and enjoy learning. It is best to give them basic obedience training. These dogs also enjoy learning tricks.

These dogs do not need clipping or unusual grooming. However, occasional baths need to be given to them. They are double coated with a coarse, water resistant outer coat and a heavy, woolly undercoat. They are heavy shedders, particularly in spring, and need combing on regular basis.

A German Shepherd dog is surely not a dog for those who cannot bear dog hair on the furniture, carpets, clothes, and so on.
